The second TechWomen delegation visit of 2018 has begun!
Upon arrival in Lagos, Nigeria, the group of 11 mentors were joined by Callie Ward from the U.S. Department of State, IIE staff and fellows of Nigeria and Cameroon for a program briefing, followed by a driving tour of the city and a visit to Terra Kulture, an educational and recreational organization that promotes the richness and diversity of Nigerian languages, arts and culture, where they viewed creations by local artists and enjoyed a lunch of traditional Nigerian food.
In the afternoon, the group visited the Nike Art Gallery, where they were greeted by owner and local artist Nike Okundaye and welcomed by traditional Nigerian drummers and dancers. Mentors and fellows had the opportunity to try traditional African dying techniques and tour the three-story gallery, which features paintings, textiles, sculptures and multi-media art by Nike and many other prominent Nigerian artists. Nike also gave the group a tour of the Gallery Annex, a newly-opened guest house for people to rent that also serves as an exhibit space for art. During the visit, Nike shared her inspirational story about coming from humble beginnings to becoming a successful artist and role model for young women, traveling the world to teach art.
The day ended with a welcome dinner at Bogobiri Gallery Restaurant and a live musical performance by a local Nigerian band. During dinner, the fellows had a chance to update the mentors on the work they have been doing since completing the TechWomen program.
